How it is calculated
Worked example
₹50 lakh corpus, ₹30,000 a month, 8% return, 20 years
Total withdrawn = ₹72 lakh
Balance after 20 years ≈ ₹69.6 lakh
Withdrawing ₹40,000 a month instead, the corpus lasts about 22.5 years
SWP for retirement income
A systematic withdrawal plan redeems a fixed amount from your mutual fund every month while the rest stays invested. It is popular for retirement income because only the gains in each withdrawal are taxed, often making it more tax-efficient than FD interest, which is fully taxed at your slab rate. A safe withdrawal rate of about 4–6% of the corpus a year, adjusted for inflation, helps the money last 25–30 years. Many retirees keep 2–3 years of withdrawals in a debt or hybrid fund to avoid selling equity in a market fall.
Tips
- Withdrawals above the fund's return eat into your capital.
- Raise withdrawals gradually to keep up with inflation.
- Capital gains tax applies on the gains portion of each redemption.
- Market returns vary year to year; review the plan annually.
