How to use the Step-Up SIP Calculator

  1. Enter your starting monthly SIP.
  2. Enter the annual step-up % — how much you will raise the SIP each year (many people match their salary hike).
  3. Enter the expected annual return and the number of years.
  4. Compare the step-up corpus with a regular SIP of the same starting amount.

How it is calculated

Each month: value = (value + current SIP) × (1 + annual return ÷ 12)    Every 12 months: SIP = SIP × (1 + step-up %)

Worked example

₹10,000 a month, 10% step-up, 12% return, 15 years

Step-up SIP value ≈ ₹86.8 lakh on ₹38.1 lakh invested

Regular SIP of ₹10,000 for 15 years ≈ ₹50.5 lakh on ₹18 lakh invested

Stepping up adds about ₹36 lakh to the final corpus

Why step-up SIP works

Your income usually grows every year, but a fixed SIP stays the same, so its share of your income keeps shrinking. A step-up (also called top-up) SIP lets your investment grow with your salary. Most mutual fund houses let you set an automatic yearly increase by a fixed amount or percentage when you start the SIP. Even a 5% step-up makes a large difference over 15–20 years.

Tips

  • Match the step-up to your expected salary hike, typically 5–10%.
  • Use conservative return assumptions: 10–12% for diversified equity over long periods.
  • Returns are not guaranteed; mutual fund investments are subject to market risk.
  • Review the plan every year and stay invested through market falls.
