How to use the Tile Calculator

  1. Enter the floor length and width in metres.
  2. Enter the tile length and width in centimetres.
  3. Click Calculate to see tiles needed, tiles with 10% waste and boxes.
  4. Check how many tiles your chosen box actually contains and adjust.

Formula used

Tiles = ⌈floor area ÷ tile area⌉    Order = ⌈tiles × 1.10⌉

Worked example

Room 4 m × 3 m

Floor area = 12 m²

With 60 × 60 cm tiles (0.36 m²): 34 tiles exact, 38 with 10% waste (about 10 boxes of 4)

With 30 × 30 cm tiles (0.09 m²): 134 tiles exact, 148 with waste

How much wastage to allow

A 10% allowance suits straight-laid tiles in a simple rectangular room. Use 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, many corners or small rooms like bathrooms, and keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs — shades vary between production lots.

Tips for accurate results

  • For walls, multiply wall length by height and subtract doors and windows.
  • Large-format tiles need a flat floor and the right adhesive.
  • Buy all tiles from the same batch number to avoid colour differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 2×2 ft tile covers 4 sq ft, so 25 tiles plus 10% waste = about 28 tiles.

Grout lines of 2–3 mm make little difference to the count; the wastage allowance covers them.

Split it into two rectangles, calculate each and add the results.
