How to use the Flooring Calculator

  1. Enter the room length and width in metres.
  2. Click Calculate to see the floor area, area with 10% waste, square feet and perimeter.
  3. Use the area with waste to buy flooring boxes.
  4. Use the perimeter to estimate skirting or beading.

Formula used

Area = L × W    Order = Area × 1.10    Perimeter = 2(L + W)

Worked example

Room 5 m × 4 m

Floor area = 20 m² (215.3 sq ft)

With 10% waste = 22 m²

Perimeter for skirting = 18 m

Choosing a flooring type

Vitrified tiles are the most common choice in Indian homes — durable and easy to clean. Laminate gives a wood look at lower cost but dislikes standing water. Luxury vinyl (LVT/SPC) is waterproof and quiet underfoot. Engineered wood and solid hardwood look premium but need more care. Laminate and vinyl are sold by the box with coverage printed in sq ft or m².

Tips for accurate results

  • Use 15% wastage for diagonal or herringbone layouts.
  • Let laminate acclimatise in the room for 48 hours before installing.
  • Leave an expansion gap of 8–10 mm at walls for laminate.
