How to use the Power Converter

  1. Enter the value you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit you are converting from.
  3. Choose the unit you are converting to (W, kW, horsepower, metric HP or BTU/h).
  4. The result updates instantly; use swap to reverse the direction.

Conversion factors

1 kW = 1,000 W  |  1 hp (mechanical) = 745.7 W  |  1 metric HP (PS) = 735.5 W  |  1 W = 3.412 BTU/h

Power is the rate of doing work, measured in watts (joules per second).

Worked example

Common conversions

1 kW = 1.341 hp = 1.360 metric HP = 3,412 BTU/h

100 hp car engine = 74.6 kW

1.5-ton AC (18,000 BTU/h) ≈ 5.3 kW of cooling

hp, PS and bhp explained

Mechanical horsepower (hp), used in the US, is 745.7 W. Metric horsepower (PS), common in Indian and European car brochures, is 735.5 W, so 100 PS is about 98.6 hp. bhp (brake horsepower) is measured at the engine shaft before losses in the gearbox. For electric motors and pumps, ratings are usually in kW or hp on the nameplate.

Tips for accurate results

  • An AC's cooling capacity in BTU/h is not its electricity use; check the input power in watts.
  • 1 ton of refrigeration = 12,000 BTU/h ≈ 3.517 kW.
  • For electricity bills, multiply kW by hours to get kWh (units).

Frequently Asked Questions

About 746 watts (mechanical) or 735.5 watts (metric).

No. kW is power; kWh is energy (power multiplied by time).

Divide BTU/h by 3.412. 12,000 BTU/h ≈ 3,517 W.
