Formula used
Worked example
Five test scores: 12, 15, 18, 20, 25
Sum = 90, count = 5
Average = 90 ÷ 5 = 18
Mean vs weighted average
A simple average treats every value equally. A weighted average gives some values more importance: if a final exam counts 60% and internals 40%, a student with 70 in the final and 90 in internals averages 0.6 × 70 + 0.4 × 90 = 78, not 80. When data has extreme values (like one very high salary), the median often describes the "typical" value better than the mean.
Tips for accurate results
- Check for typing mistakes; one wrong value can shift the average a lot.
- Averages of percentages are only meaningful if the totals behind them are equal.
- For CGPA, use credit-weighted averages.
