Mulch Calculator
Calculate how many bags or cubic meters of mulch you need for your garden or landscape beds.
Mulch Required
How to use the Mulch Calculator
- Enter the bed length and width in metres.
- Enter the mulch depth in centimetres.
- Click Calculate to see the volume and number of 50 L bags.
- For curved beds, estimate the area as a combination of rectangles.
Formula used
Worked example
Bed 5 m × 3 m, 5 cm deep
Volume = 5 × 3 × 0.05 = 0.75 m³
Bags of 50 L needed = 15
How deep should mulch be?
A layer of 5–7 cm suppresses weeds and holds moisture for most beds; use 2–3 cm for fine mulches like cocopeat or compost. Keep mulch a few centimetres away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot. Organic mulches such as dry leaves, straw, wood chips and cocopeat improve soil as they break down, which is useful in hot Indian summers to reduce watering.
Tips for accurate results
- Water the soil and remove weeds before mulching.
- Top up organic mulch once or twice a year.
- 1 m³ = 1,000 litres, so divide litres by your bag size if it is not 50 L.
