Conversion factors
This converter uses binary (base-2) units, as operating systems like Windows do. Storage makers use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes).
Worked example
Common conversions
1 GB = 1,024 MB = 1,048,576 KB
1 TB = 1,024 GB
A 5 MB photo: about 205 photos fit in 1 GB
Why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB
Manufacturers sell drives in decimal units: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024 three times, which gives about 931 GB. Nothing is missing — it is two different counting systems. The precise binary names are KiB, MiB and GiB, but most software still labels them KB, MB and GB.
Tips for accurate results
- Internet speeds are in megabits (Mb), not megabytes (MB): divide Mbps by 8 for MB per second.
- A 100 Mbps connection downloads about 12.5 MB per second at best.
- Phone storage also loses some space to the operating system.
